Duke of Argyll pub, on the corner of Brewer Street and Great Windmill Street, Soho
The name comes from John Campbell, the 2nd Duke of Argyll, one of the Duke of Marlborough’s leading generals and a landowner in this area, The London mansion of the dukes was located where the London Palladium now stands.
The street is named after two breweries, Ayres’s and Davis’s (both demolished), which stood from 1674.
The public house has seen extensive refurbishment returning the pub to something like its former Victorian glory. Four “snugs” opening direct to the bar, have been re-installed in accordance with plans of 1886 which are on display at the foot of the stairs”
